The interface circuit is the component of the transmitter that receives electrical signals from an electronic device such as a computer or a fax machine. This is where signals are first interpreted. Since computers and fax machines are electronic in nature, their primary means of passing on information is in the form of electrical signals. In the past, these signals were carried by copper wires for great distances. But since electrical signals are easily lost and resisted through these wires, they travel slowly and deteriorate in quality. It wasn’t until fiber optics was discovered that signals began moving faster and better. Fiber optics allowed information to be transmitted at the speed of light across greater distances with virtually no loss in signal quality. However, the drawback to this technology is that the special optical fibers only carry light signals. This is where the second component of Fiber optics transmitters comes in. After the electrical signals are received by the interface circuit, the source drive circuit then transforms the electrical signals into light signals. In contrast to electrical signals, light signals transmit information by changes in pulse intervals and light intensities. The source drive circuit is the one that triggers the third and last parts of the Fiber optics transmitters’ component called the optical source. This optical source is the portion of the transmitter that contains a light emitting diode (LED) or a laser diode. This component is the one that lights up and passes on the light signals to the fiber optics.
